None of the dogs in my life were ever formally trained. We just never thought to go through an official class, probably because we just didn't want to spend the money. So my family just kinda trained our dogs how we could. As long as they did their business outside and sat down when we asked we were happy campers. And honestly that's really all I'm interested in for Elphie, too. I just want her to be able to sit, stay and come when she's called. Oh, and go to the bathroom outside. That's a big one!
There is one trick Elphie does know how to do...she knows how to fall asleep in my lap on command. Now that's talent!

Cooper and I did classes at PetSmart. Best thing I ever did even if it was only for the socialization part. It taught him young how to play and behave around the other dogs. As for the "training" it was good and we both earned a lot.
ReplyDeleteI called PetSmart first to get some info on their classes, because there's one just around the corner from us and I really like their store (they have a pet hotel AND a vet office), but their classes were a little bit more expensive than Petco and they had inconvenient hours for us.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing it mostly to teach her how to socialize with other dogs as well as bonding with us. Right now I think she's a little scared of the hubby - probably because he's dominating and acting more Alpha!
